Remodeling with the Planet in Mind: Sustainable Kitchen Ideas

We recently had the opportunity to work with a client who was committed to sustainability in their kitchen remodel. Their goals were clear: reduce waste, minimize their carbon footprint, and prioritize sustainable materials. From low haning fruit to resources that require some research and digging. This project snapshot describes the choices we made.

The Quarry in Your Kitchen at the New Britain Museum

Edward Burtynsky, Rock of Ages #7, Abandoned Section, Wells-Lamson Quarry, Barre, Vermont, 1991.

Edward Burtynsky’s astonishing photographs depict, in large scale, our human impact on the planet—an endeavor that has led him across North America and around the world, and that has resulted in some of the most iconic, beautiful, and unsettling images of our times. An exhibition of his work is at the New Britain Museum of American Art now through April 16th and is worth visiting. A few years back I wrote about the connection between the materials we use and their source.

Frame It

One thing folks envy about people who build things is the satisfaction that comes from seeing the fruits of your labor on a daily basis. On a good day something tangible exists that wasn't there that morning. Constructing a home involves many trades but there is no doubt that the framer enjoys that result in a big way. The framer brings the form of the building to life and almost magically what was just lines on paper is suddenly real.

We call them “Great Spaces.” In so many homes some or all of these spaces just aren’t working. We’re here to remedy that. One of these is your "Suite Retreat" - a sanctuary that accommodates a cozy bedroom, an ample closet and dressing space, and a bathroom you’re happy to spend time in. A space to unwind, connect, and renew

Where do the children play?

If you have kids, or grandkids, you can't help but be inspired by the International School Grounds Alliance, a global network working to enrich children’s learning and play through improving the way school grounds are designed and used. They see that the wellbeing of children and the ecological diversity of their learning landscapes are intrinsically linked and aims to support all schools in making the most of the opportunities excellent school grounds afford. Where do the children in your life play?
